If you’re planning a trip to the UK and you’re from a country that didn’t need a visa before—there’s a new rule you need to know about. The UK has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and it’s now essential for many travelers.
But don’t worry—it’s affordable, quick, and you can apply right from your phone.
🇬🇧 What is the UK ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new entry requirement for visitors who don’t need a visa to enter the UK. It allows you to visit for up to six months at a time for:
- Tourism
- Business
- Visiting friends or family
- Short-term study
An ETA is valid for two years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first) and allows multiple trips to the UK within that time.

💷 ETA Cost & Changes from April 2025
An ETA currently costs £10, but this will change soon.
📅 From 9 April 2025, the cost will increase to £16.
Just a heads-up: this fee is kept under review, so it could change again in future. Still, it’s more affordable than traditional visas and covers multiple visits for two years.
🧾 Who Needs an ETA?
If you’re from a visa-free country like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or most EU countries, you’ll need an ETA to travel to the UK.
✅ You do NOT need one if you are:
- A British or Irish citizen
- Already holding a UK visa or permit
- A legal resident of Ireland travelling from within the Common Travel Area
📲 How to Apply (It’s Easy!)
The application is fully digital. According to the UK government, there are just 3 simple steps:
- Confirm your identity
- Answer some security questions
- Pay the application fee (£10 now, £16 from April 9, 2025)
Most applications are processed in under 3 working days, but it’s best to apply early—just in case.
